Excel/cells formatted as text


Hi Tom

I am trying to do a vlookup, but the common cell is formatted as text in one spreadsheet, but as a number in another, and hence the lookup isn't working.  I cant change the format of either cells, is there a way I can make the look up work?


If the leftmost column of the lookup range is number, and the lookup value is text, then do this:

if it is the opposite then to convert the lookup value to text:


some people would do


rather than the text function.

I am just showing representative formulas to illustrate the approach.
