# Excel/formula syntax

Question
Hi Tom

Could you tell where I have gone wrong with this formula?

=IF(L4,"aut 1",AVERAGEIF(B15:B1500,L3,AF15:AF1500))

If L4 contains the phrase "AUT 1" I would like the formula to perform the average if function.

Stumped in London.

Christopher Mitchell,

=IF(L4,"aut 1",AVERAGEIF(B15:B1500,L3,AF15:AF1500))

should be

=IF(L4="aut 1",AVERAGEIF(B15:B1500,L3,AF15:AF1500))

as you wrote it, if L4 is not empty or contains false, then it would return "aut 1", otherwise it would perform the average.

so now, what do you want it to return if L4 <> "aut 1".  Right now it will return False.  To Make the cell with the formula look blank"

=IF(L4="aut 1",AVERAGEIF(B15:B1500,L3,AF15:AF1500),"")

so replace the "" with what you want the function to return if L4<>"aut 1"
