Excel/the today() function

hello, Jerry, how are you?

today is 2/18/2015. I want to use a formula that includes the Today()function. The function generates today's date, but when I try  it, I get a serial number rather than the conventional format, which would yield 02/18/2015.

The function that I wrote looks this:
="written on "&today()&" by Chris".

The result is:
written on 42053 by Chris

which is not what I want.

Can you help?

You've just discovered the underlying secret behind how date and time formats work.

Dates are whole numbers.  February 18, 2015 is the whole number 42053.  Excel then applies formatting tricks to display that date any way you want, 100s of variations are possible.

If your desired date format is MM/DD/YYYY then you will need to ask Excel to do that in the middle of your formula:

="written on " & TEXT(TODAY(), "MM/DD/YYYY") & " by Chris"

Reminder, EVERY TIME you open that workbook that cell will update to today's date.  So if you create a workbook on 2/18/2015 then open that workbook on 12/31/2015, the date showing as "written on 12/31/2015 by Chris".
