Question Hank,
We are considering importing alarms from China. These are similar to car and motorcycle alarms. The items will have a value of US$5-$6000. Is there any import duty on these? Do we need to arrange for an importer?
Francis
It says the following:
Electric sound or visual signaling apparatus (for
example, bells, sirens, indicator panels, burglar or fire
alarms), other than those of heading 8512 or 8530;
parts thereof:
The duty rate is between free and 1.3% depending on the specific classification.
To be absolutely sure you need to call customs to confirm. Call 973-368-6110 and ask for the "Alarms Team".
I don't know what you mean by "Arrange for an importer". You are the importer. You need a freight forwarder and a customs broker. Many freight forwarders also serve as customs brokers. Try Apex or Schenker.
