Subject: Switching Doctors

Question
My boyfriend's mom has internal bleeding and other bacteria problems. We are looking at switching her to a different (bigger) hospital to seek the care she needs. (She fell last night because she past out, and this is when they noticed she was bleeding internally and she really past out. She is on air and they aren't allowing her to sleep, which we understand.) We are consurned this needs to be done a.s.a.p. But... Her current doctor doesn't want her to go down to this bigger hospital. My mom mentioned switching doctors to our family friend who has the same opinions we do. But.. yet again, her current doctor says she can't switch doctors now because they wouldn't know what is going on... Is this right? Or is she legally able to change doctors and what do we have to do to make this change?

Answer
Hi Nicole,
Is she now in the hospital? if so, she may not be stable enough to  be transferred right now. If she isn't, she can see whomever she wants. It is her right to change doctors if she chooses but if she is seriously ill and in the hospital, it is best she stays there till she improves enough to be discharged ot transfered.
