Question
Hi Dr. Aukerman, I have another question for you. My name is Tyler and I am 17. I have this weird thing going on when I eat food. When eating food, I chew food many, many times (about 40 or more) before swallowing. I eat very slowly, and I chew so much that food builds up in my mouth and my cheeks will be filled. Everyone I am eating with can tell and its been happening for about 2 years now (hasn't always been like this) I basically cannot control my own swallowing. Its hard to swallow the food on command, I must actually chew even mashed potatoes many times before swallowing. Not sure if this is psychological or something to do with the muscles in my throat or what. I would love to figure out what this is, and that I'm not the only one out there with this problem. Thanks so much for answering my question!

Tyler

Answer
This is the other half of your problem called an eating disorder so ask your doctor for a referral to a person that specializes in this. We use relaxation, hypnosis and acupuncture for this condition but need to see what your parents and doctors think first

To learn more go to www.medicalcenter.osu.edu/go/integrative for information and class on how to fix this

For Eating disorder go to www.mayoclinic.com and search for eating disorder

Please share this with your parents before you take any course of action
