Topic: Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions

Subject: how do humidifiers effect COPD

Question
I have sinus problems - dry sinus with some bleeding.  My doc said to sleep with a bedside humidifier (and load my nose with vasoline and spray with saline spray)for relief.  My husband has COPD & thinks that if he sleeps in the same room with a humidifier it may have an adverse effect.  (It is cool, no visible moisture unit.)  So, I've been sleeping on the couch.  Is that necessary?  Will having the small bedside humidifier near me in the bedroom have any kind of negative effect on his COPD or is he being silly?  Many thanks for your expected response.

Answer
Judith,

Moist air produced by a typical home humidifier should have no untoward effects on anyone in close proximity with COPD.  Smoking cigarettes or second hand smoke to anyone with COPD / Emphysemia on the other hand would be a different story.

So you don't have to isolate yourself and sleep on the couch.
