Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Gummy Bear multi vitamin - can it cause tummy pain?

Expert: Robert Borucki - 10/23/2009

Question
Dear dr. Borucki,

My children (5 year old and 1 year old) love Gummi Bear multivitamins but they seem to upset my 5 year old daughter's digestive system. For some reason each time she eats those vitamins she has trouble after her meals. She would complain that her "tummy is painful" each time she eats food..she started eating very little as well. I stopped vitamins and it seemed to me that it was less complaining. I used to buy Little Critter's gummies but then I changed into RiteAid pharmacy's gummies. The same complain that she doesn't feel good. I have no idea if vitamins can cause such a thing. I will write the contents of this vitamine:
2 gummy bears contain (I give only 1 though)
Sugar 4g
VitaminA 2,500 IU
VitaminC 15mg
VitaminD3 50IU
Vitamin E 15 IU
Vitamin B6 500mcg
Folate 200mg
Vitamin B12 3mcg
Biotin 45 mcg
Pantotheric Acid 2.5mg
Calcium 4 mg
Iodide 30 mcg
Magnesium 2mg
Zinc 2mg
Choline 10mcg
Inositol 10mcg

A number of ingredients are listed under "other": corn syrup, sugar, water, gelatin, citric acid, natural orange, lemon, strawberry flavors, natural colors, annato (??), black carrot extract (?????), vegetable oil, beeswax and carnauba wax (what is that for god's sake?!)

She has itchy skin from peanuts and maybe citric accid but other than that she has no allergies. I would appreciate your answer.

Thank you!

Answer
a lot of kids that age say their tummy hurts when they have cramps, prior to a loose stool or diarrhea.  The sugars in those vitamins may cause some cramps and diarrhea.  If it is the cause, stopping it should resolve symptoms very quickly... in a couple of days.  If they are still there, then you may have to look elsewhere.... Hope this helps.... With the itchy skin and peanuts, sounds like a peanut allergy, which can be bad if eaten.... along with other nuts.
