Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Sensitive Nipples

Expert: Robert Borucki - 10/28/2009

Question
I am embarrassed to say this, but... somewhere along in my early married life, my wife caressed my nipples during foreplay.  several occurrences of this brought about the realization that my nipples were very sensitive in a sexual way.   Years later, now that sex is no longer an occurrence in our lives ( I am now 80 )I find that by looking at naked women on certain websites and carressing BOTH nipples at once, I begin to get aroused...  eventually, I get so aroused I begin to masturbate.  Although my penis does not get rock hard ( far from it ) I am able to manipulate it enough to have an orgasm.   Afterwards, I am dreadfully ashamed of myself.  Lately, this nipple caressing ( it HAS to be both nipples at once ) has become a habit, oftentimes in bed ( we sleep in separate bedrooms because of sleep problems ) and I am now wishing that I could cut off or desensitize my nipples so that I could NEVER be aroused that way again.   Do you have any suggestions as to a remedy for me?  I heard there were over-the-counter medications ( gel ) I could use to desensitize them... is that true?  If not, what can I do to stop myself from this terrible habit? I know this might not bother some people, but it bothers the heck out of me and I want to be able to discontinue it.  Thanks for any response you can provide. I have to wonder if OTHER men are afflicted with this?  Let my question be made public in the event your answer may help others with this same problem... if they perceive it as I do... as a PROBLEM I would like to discontinue... BADLY!

Answer
there are a couple issues here.... the nipple sensitivity is not the problem with respect to the computer porn/masturbation.... that is a separate issue.  But...

The nipple sensitivity is a pretty common complaint among men... especially people on hormone replacement (testosterone) or anabolic steroids.  It would also key me to suggest that you have your thyroid levels checked, sometimes hypothyroid can cause the pituitary to pump out some hormones that lead to this.    So assuming that is checked, you could try a lidoderm patch (cut up over the areola/nipple.  But again, even if the nipples were removed, the other issue of sexual release/masturbation, with or without pornography needs to be addressed.    On the ashamed part.... normal sexual function is not shaming.  Getting into a habit of surfing computer porn could be....

I hope this helps....
