Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - cold hands after running

Expert: Robert Borucki - 10/26/2009

Question
I'm 63, male, 6'3", 185...Cholesterol levels excellent, have a cardiologist who thinks i'm his healthiest patient - i'm an avid runner (about 40 miles a week) 2 marathons a year. Resting heart rate of 44bpm.....I take aciphex for stomach and benicar for bp....I know the weather has changed some (live in NC) and i've noticed that after my runs now my hands, particularly my fingers stay cold throughout the day.  They don't hurt, swell, or change color, etc., just stay cold.  Guess it could be the weather, I don't know.....(i've never liked cold weather but run in it anyway.)  They usually start to get cold about an hour after my runs and last several hours.  I have no other symptoms and my runs are always good....other than the cold hands, I feel very good...have had every heart test known, and like i said, my dr. thinks i'm in perfect health....he did recently change me from diovan to benicar for bp and was wondering if the benicar could be causing this problem....wondering what you think....thanks

Answer
the benicar won't cause that..... The biggest concern I have is that your thyroid is too low... Your heart rate may be just good conditioning but make sure your thyroid is OK... that would also cause the hand symptoms.  If the thyroid is normal.... gloves, or a trick is to put one or both hands under the warmest water you can stand for a minute and that will relax the arteries carrying blood to the hands and warm them up....
