Question My wife has been diagnosed with osteoporosis. (Her T score is
-3.6) She is 56. She has not wanted take any osteoporosis medication because of the side effects and the somewhat unproven nature of the benefits. I have recently been researching the benefits of supplemental Vitamin D and would appreciate your opinion of taking 1000 IU daily. My wife also takes calcium supplements and a multivitamin that would bring her total daily intake to 2300IU (excluding food).
Thanks.
Answer everyone should be on at least 1000IU's of D3 a day.... that will not be enough to help your wife. There are proven benefits of those drugs... the biggest real side effect is stomach upset.... that can be avoided by using one of the IV drugs. The theoretical problem that occurs occasionally is the osteonecr of the jaw. That is a pretty rare occurrence that happens in a small small percentage of people for an unknown reason. Anyways.... like I said, everyone should be on 1000-2000 of D a day
