Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Cut fingertip, over 5 weeks and still painful

Expert: Robert Borucki - 11/6/2009

Question
I cut my left middle finger while preparing food 37 days ago, the knife went about halfway through fingertip, I went to urgent care immediately, only about 1/3 of the nail was cut in the process and the doctor said it could be left intact.  I had four stitches in the rest of my finger.  The tip above the cut is numb at the surface.  Pressure on the top numb part causes some pain nearer to where the cut was.  Pressure at the cut line can cause very sharp pain, the only thing I can relate it to is the feeling a needle pressing down towards the bone.  It's enough that I still can't really use that finger to grip anything, hard surfaces are especially bad.  Is it normal to have pain this long after?  The stitches came out a week after the cut, a week after that a thick piece of dead skin from the cut up to the tip which had never healed shut came off but everything underneath was healthy looking pink skin.  I can manage with the numbness but I'm a little frustrated with the continuing pain.

Answer
I did the same thing on a meat slicer many years ago... that pic could have passed for my finger..... it will take a few more months for it to be fullly functional and it will feel funny for years.... sometimes hypersensitive.  There are a lot of nerves in that tip and some grow back funny and are very sensitive...
