Question
Hello, how are you? My name is Amber and I am writing to you because I need some help. For the last week and a half I have been having really bad pains in my upper stomach on the right side. I have also been vomiting and I have had diarrhea fevers and chills. I went to patient first about a week ago they sent me to the emergency room. I went there and they just did blood work and an ultrasound and said nothing was wrong. The next day I was throwing up alot more and the pain got alot worse so I went back to the emergency room. I had the same doctor I had the night before. He did blood work again. This time he did a cat scan but he said everything looked ok. He admitted me to the hospital for further testing. I was in there for a few days and all they did was blood work. They said it could be due to my period which it wasn't even time for and I have never had any problems like this with my period. They gave me a few bags of IV antibiotics and sent me home on pain and nausea medicine. Since then things have gotten worse. The pain is worse and now when I throw up or have a bowel movement which is still diarrhea it looks like there is blood in it. I looked at my discharge instructions and it says they saw some fluid around my gallbladder and it says I have a fatty liver, which they never told me in the hospital. They didn't tell me to come back or follow up with my doctor and I ham starting to get worried. I can't keep anything I eat or drink in and I am losing weight. Before I left the hospital they gave me food to eat which I couldn't keep down but the doctor still sent me home. I told the nurse and she thought I should have been kept longer and had more tests done but the doctor ignored her and said I was being discharged. Is this something I should worry about? No one seems to know what is causing it but I am in so much pain. Any help or advice you can give me is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Answer
I hear this a lot.... sometimes, even with symptoms, we can't figure out the exact diagnosis early on.... this has been going on long enough where we should be able to figure it out.  If you have a regular doc, see him and have him get all the info from the hospital.  Or have him refer you to a gastroenterologist who can look at what has been done and where to go from here.  Things like a kidney stone or big gall stones should have been seen on the cat scan.  The fever implies an infection... but get to your primary doc......
