Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - intercostal strain

Expert: Robert Borucki - 11/6/2009

Question
I must have slept in an awkward position last night because when I woke up the next morning, I was in severe pain around my left posterior rib area.I can't move without it hurting. My question is how long does it take for this strain to go away and is cold better than heat in this situation?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Answer
it may be that, or it could be the beginning of a lung infection..... pneumonia, pleuritis, etc.

Also kidney stone can cause pain there.  Also look for a rash in the next 24-36 hours as it could be shingles occurring.   If it isn't all of those, try some alleve/advil and it should resolve over 48 hours.   If you do get the rash, call your doc immed for a medicine for it.
