Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - jumping from an airplane

Expert: Robert Borucki - 11/3/2009

Question
dear Sir, in case an airplane is having problems and will crash, why don't they equip the plane with special sky diving parachutes for each passenger?
Thanks
Serge

Answer
it is a rare occasion when you will have enough time to strap on parachutes and get trained to survive jumping out of an airplane.  Usually the problems come on fairly fast.... it has to be a problem not too high up, so people lose consciousness and not too low so that they splat on the ground.... and those situations in an emergency... like a potential  crash are rare... I can't even recall a commercial plane accident where that would have saved people.  Plus the extra weight and space for the chutes
