Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - lymph system

Expert: Robert Borucki - 11/2/2009

Question
Hello - I actually have two questions:
1) when you are ill with say the flu and your chest hurts - is that soreness actually the lymphnodes surrounding the chest that are aching?
2)Are runner's cramps actually the spleen pumping out more blood due to increased o2 demand?

Answer
1) no... it is muscles aching from inflammation and the lining of the lung (pleura) also inflamed

2) runner cramps.... no (O for 2!)   It is the muscle cramping because it demanded more oxygen due to work than it could get... also it produces waste products (lactic acid) that contributes to the cramps....
