Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Baby tested positive for drugs

Expert: Robert Borucki - 6/25/2009

Question
WE are currently pursuing custody of my step-daughter and we just found out that the baby her mother recently just gave birth to tested positive for marijuana and Barbs. the Levels of the Marijuana was 30 and the barbs just came out positive. With stating that I am a firm believer that the levels should have been 0, is the levels at 30 high or low. The results came from a blood test on the infant. We go to court Monday to file to have the mother drug tested follicle and I'm wondering how much she would have had to smoke in order for the baby to test at that level at birth.

Answer
you ask some tough questions.... the drug testing is not standardized between labs so there isn't a way to tell.  But, a positive test is a positive test, hair testing can add some information and I don't know how much you would smoke to test positive on hair, but it would have to be some for most days of the week.   Hope this helps...
