It really depends on the medication. Alcohol has it's own side-effects like dehydration, blood thinning and sedation etc and when mixed with certain medications it can lead to potentially lethal consequences. If you mix booze and narcotic analgesics it could cause severe respiratory depression which could lead you to stop breathing all together.
I can't list all the potential combinations and side-effects here so it's always best not to mix pills and booze, or if you have to take a medication for a long time, just discuss alcohol use with a pharmacist to be safe.
