Stay Beautiful Safely Keeping Skin, Hair and Nails Looking Great During Pregnancy By Nicole Gray Nail Care Admittedly, a woman’s beauty routine might feel downright spartan when she’s pregnant, but there is one area of virtual freedom. You can maintain well-groomed hands and feet. According to Dr. Fawzia Zawahir, a Jersey City, N.J.-based pediatrician trained in maternal-fetal health, “Manicures and pedicures are OK, because nail lacquer is not absorbed into the nail bed.” According to Dr. Zawahir, the issue of absorption is key. “The areas of greatest concern are with those products that can cross the placenta," she says. "Things that cross the placenta can affect the way DNA replicates, which may lead to birth defects.”

Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Scarlet Fever symptoms? (15 days and no treatment)

Expert: Fawzia Zawahir M.D. - 6/26/2009

Question
15 days ago I developed a very sore throat, and put this down to a history of sore throats and tonsillitis. However, my symptoms were not the same this time around (before I would have a very high temperature, go between being too hot and too cold, couldn't get out of bed for days due to extreme tiredness and drowsiness, and had a complete loss of appetite), this time I only had very swollen tonsils. A few days later I developed a rash on the palms of my hands (hundreds of tiny red bumps under the skin), but due to warm weather put this down to heat rash. The rash has now progressed up my arm (but is not around the armpit, feet, chest or groin area). The skin on the tips of my fingers has become very dry and the bumps are easily felt here. I've also developed a sharp headache today, but as it comes and goes I'm unsure as to whether it's a symptom of an illness or just due to lack of sleep. I'm now thinking that perhaps I've contracted Scarlet Fever, and I'm worried as I've left it this long to get it seen to. My doctor only schedules appointments for the week on a Monday (although I called earlier today and was promised a phone call back but as of yet have not received it) and I'm afraid of leaving it until then to get a diagnosis - because if it is Scarlet Fever then Monday will be the 18th day of having it without treatment and I've read that this is usually when Rheumatic Fever sets in. Also, my face doesn't appear as red as in most of the pictures I've seen of people with this illness.
I'm almost 21, so I know I don't fall into the age ranges of the most susceptible to this illness, and my mother has informed me that I was treated for Scarlet Fever as a child which I have read means I "can't contract it again".
Any advice you can offer on this matter (like whether or not the symptoms are consistant with Scarlet Fever) would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Lauren. Thank you for your question. I have a few questions for you to help clarify. What does the rash feel like when you run your hand over it? Are the red bumps raised and how big are they. What were you doing in the week prior to the sore throat (travel, sick contact, exposure to wilderness etc.?). Are you otherwise healthy?

Has the rash spread to your face or is it limited only to the arm are? In otherwise is the redness in your face a rash or is it flushing? What does your tongue look like? Do you have any swollen glands? Do you have any joint pains? Have you been treated for strep repeatedly?

Thanks in advance for the additional info, it will help me get a better picture. If you are feeling very sick you should seek more immediate medical care.
