Question My father is 79 and drinks alcohol regularly. Not sure if that has anything to do with the skin condition I have noticed. He has a large dark bruise or maybe vessels that have collapsed under his skin on his left arm. What is that? Is it serious?
Answer Hi Patty and thanks for writing,
You should have your Dad go see his family docotr and have regualr blood tests (every few months) to ensure his blood doesn't get too thin. Alcohol is a natural blood thinner, as is several foods and some medications and together they can be lethal if mixed. There is an easy test the docs can perform to stay on top of it and even treat if necessary.
In the meantime you might encourage him to eat foods High in Vitamin K such as: Kale Mustard,, Collard and Turnip greens, Lettuce, Spinach, Cabbage, Broccoli, Red leaf lettuce , Coleslaw
and Sauerkraut. Vit K is a nutrient found in the small intestine where it combines with protein to produce clotting of the blood; deep green vegetables, like spinach, kale and collard greens, contain the highest amounts of Vit K.
