Question I was injured 15 years ago in a baseball game with a line drive to my thigh. I received a hematoma about 10" wide(the entire width of my thigh)and 1/4" thick and of course, it was very painful. I did not go to the doctor because I had no insurance, but a nurse(friend) told me I should have someone break up the hematoma with massage or it would never be absorbed back into my system. This was done and was very painful. It took about 18 months for the entire blood clot to be reabsorbed. I am afraid I have permanent muscle damage to my entire thigh because I am still in lots of pain every day and cannot sleep very well because of it. As I get older,(I am 46 now) the pain is worsening and increasing. I have many broken capillaries that are occuring now with this leg and the muscle aches during most waking hours as well. Should I have this checked out after 15 years? Would a test or a physician or therapist be able to isolate any conditions this may have caused? Also, is there anything that can be done for muscle damage such as this or the pain?
Thank you so much for your advice.
Answer Hi Mari,
This could be something called Myositis ossificans. This is when traumatized muscle turns to a bone like substance. It can cause pain ans intermittent swelling. I would have an ulrasound or MRI of the muscle involved to see just what‘s going on. If it is a myositis, that area can be removed. If it just truamtized muscle and no conversion to bony material, physical therapy using ultrasound may help some. I would check with your doctor.
