A "fractured spleen" is caused by a trauma to the spleen resulting in its division into two halves. The spleen filters out infection and other unwanted particles from the blood; as part of the lymphatic system, it plays an important role in protecting the body by "cleaning" the blood.
Because of its location, the spleen is prone to getting injured, the impact of the injury can actually cause the spleen to rupture resulting in massive blood loss. This situation is considered a medical emergency and the usual treatment is to remove the spleen and repair any other damage surgically.
