Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - line down chest

Expert: John Thai, M.D. - 7/2/2009

Question
I noticed lately that my 7 year old son has a line in the middle of his chest going down to his lower abdomen, as if dividing his body. It is white in color and very noticable. Is this something to be concerned about?

Answer
Hi Deedee,

That is normal. That line is call linea alba. it is a white fibrous structure that divides the right and left abdominal muscles. the darker a lean child's skin tone, the more visible it is. Parents usually notice it more often after their child gets a suntan.
