Expert: Dr Khalid M Munir - 8/28/2009

Question
Hi My son is 15.8 years old and just about 5'5. He has grown about an inch in the past year. He took that bone test and the Dr stated that due to where his bones are for his age that he would only grow another inch. I am concerned that he would only be 5'6 or so. He was small birth wieght at 5 lbs and 18 1/2 inches long when he was born. I am 5 "3.5 and my ex is 5"10 man. At what point do you think my son will stop growing and is  he suitable for growth horomone therapy

Answer
Hi,
the birth weight and height appear to be  OK. Tell him to do regular active exercise or take part in outdoor games and also take a balanced diet having high protein and calcium. He may have good chance to grow in height till about 18 to 20 years of age. the height of the parents is not a limting factor.
