Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - blood thickness

Expert: Glen F. Aukerman, M.D. - 8/19/2009

Question
Dear Dr. Aukerman:

My doctor recently took me off Coumadin after being on it for 16 years. I have several questions:

1. I now take Nattokanise just to insure my blood does not get too thick. Is there a way I can self test my blood to see if it not too thick or too thin?

2. Is the PT test vaild if a person is NOT on blood thinners?

3. How long before the Coumadin is out of my system?

4. Is there a supplement I should take to "clean" out my system from the Coumadin?

Thank you for taking the time to help others.

Bill

Answer
Is there a way I can self test my blood to see if it not too thick or too thin? PT/INR

2. Is the PT test vaild if a person is NOT on blood thinners? Yes, plus Hemoglobin and hematocrit

3. How long before the Coumadin is out of my system? 60-120 hours

4. Is there a supplement I should take to "clean" out my system from the Coumadin? B-100 time-released b complex helps

Note: Nattokinase is not effective for the purpose you are using it

Research fish oil for this purpose but need triple strength taken 5-7 times daily
