Question Dear Dr Saleeby,
I am aged 73 and following a cholesterol reducing diet supplied by my GP. I would like to dispense with dairy products, and to replace them with soya alternatives. However I am aware that soya products have a very adverse ratio of omega 3 to 6 - as much as 1:7, whereas recent research shows that ratio should be more like 3:1. Would I be better to risk the saturated fats with a moderate use of dairy products, or the high ratio of omega 6 to 3 in soya substitutes?
Answer John,
Not sure why you want to eliminate diary products in the first place, but note that all that is soy is not fantastic. For instance in addition to the n-3,6 FA ratios there is the fact that too much soy is goiterogenic. My suggestion is to have a "balance" of n-FA sources... use some dairy and use some soy... but not one exclusively over another. When all is said and all the research is in... it will most likely show that moderation in all things and a balance of all foods available to the human race will in the end trump the "expert recommended diet".
Time and again it has been shown that the current fad (whether diet, drugs, etc.) fall short in the end. Best advice is to NOT be extreme in all things exercise, diet, supplements, and life.
