Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions/over sensitive to carbohydrates?

Question
Dr.,
I am 55. I am not diabetic, although I do have the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Diabetes runs in my family so I have always watched my sugar and refined starch intake. I have found over the years that a low carb, or low glycemic carb diet also was the only way to keep my weight and especially belly in check, in spite of being active and eating fairly low calorie.
I recently returned from a two week vacation. The 'healthy' food options were limited, and I did go off my regular eating habits, although I did not overindulge calorie wise.
I was surprised to find had gained ten pounds, and my belly got so big I couldn't wear my regular work slacks!
Is this a confirmation that I am indeed overly sensitive to carbs? Could I have some type of insulin or pancreas disorder and not have diabetes? Thanks!

Answer
Bud,

You have a condition called IRS... Insulin Resistance Syndrome... it is very common and multi factorial but includes genetic predispositions.  A fasting Glucose level and HbA1c may miss this early on... there are more advanced testing biomarkers that can pick it up 5 to 10 years earlier.  Also a 5 hour glucose challenge test(GGT) can pick it up.

There is a laboratory in the USA (Richmond, VA) called Health Diagnostics Labs that offers a 3-Dimensional DM (3DDM) screening test... those advanced biomarkers are available from them... Have your local MD find out who offers them up in Canada and get them done on yourself.  Also following Dr. Barry Sear's "Zone" diet books recommendations is a very good way to combat IRS.
