Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions/Thyroid Issue

My TSH results where 3.70 and 3.11 respectively in the past week. My T3 AND T4 where normal. My Antibodies test came back normal. I was put on Synthroid 75mcg. Does this mean I have Hypothyroidism?

I practice in Cary, NC with Priority Health Triange.  I specialize in thyroid disorders and have co-authored a book on the subject that you may find interesting  "Stop the Thyroid Madness, II" came out end of last year.  Anyway, you have no reason to check TSHs that close together.  A TSH less than 2.5 s considered by forward thinking MDs as normal, so yours is a bit high.  Having a relatively elevated TSH with normal fT3 and fT4 is called "subclinical hypothyroidism" and if you have Hypo features than you have hypothyroidism.  Synthroid is NOT the best Rx for you.  You need MTHFR and methylation pathway testing and other test for Ferritin, Fe, Vit D levels, etc. to make sure you have adequate T4 to T3 conversion (especially if you are to remain on Synthroid (T4-only) therapy.  My patients do much better on NDT.  Also one must never forget about the Adrenal Gland function.  Depending on your symptoms, that may need to be tested as well. is a helpful site.

All the Best,
