Question
Hello:  My wife underwent a thoracotomy with decortication surgery in 2009.  SInce the surgery, she has had severe pain involving dislocating ribs. When she moves in certain ways, or bends over she experiences ahrp, stabbing pains.  Her primary care physician and pulmonologist have basically told her that nothing can be done to alleviate this problem.  I'm not sure if this falls within your area of expertise, but I would appreciate some guidance if possible.  Thank you.

Answer
Dennis,

There are no significant studies that show that pain management can help with this problem. I recommend looking outside standard western medicine and trying alternative medicine. Acupuncture may help with the pain as well as strengthen the muscles that surround the ribs. I would consult with a naturopathic physician for recommendations.
