Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions/Large tonsils and cardiac arrest

My Husband has always had very large tonsils. When he was a child, a nurse told him if he did not get them removed by the time he was 30, that he would suffer cardiac arrest. He's almost 30, and has trouble breathing at night. He's still worried about what she said. Is it true? Can you go into cardiac arrest due to large tonsils?

Dear Lauren,

The tonsils will not cause a heart attack. If he is suffering from sleep apnea, he can develop cardiomyopathy which can lead to heart failure. I recommend an appointment with his primary care provider to evaluate the need for a sleep study. This will give you the information you need to decide if he should have his tonsils removed.
