Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions/blood pressure tablet -reg

Dear Dr.Pamela M. Cipriano, DNP, APRN,
My mother 72 years old is taking INDAPAMIDE sr(Sustained release) 1.5 mg tablet daily in the morning after food.Recent blood test shows normal and she is good health. I just want to ask one question.can she reduce the dosage of this medicine slowly with regular BP check up.If everything normal, can she withdraw this medication. why unnecessarily taking this drug.

Kindly answer

Dear Reg,

There are many reasons why a blood pressure medication is prescribed. It is not only to control blood pressure. Chronic hypertension can lead to kidney failure, heart failure, and left ventricular hypertrophy. Before changing the dosage on your mother's blood pressure medication, be sure to discuss this with her doctor. There may be reasons that she should stay on it.
