Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - Ciproflaxin - Long Term Use

Expert: Robert Borucki - 7/1/2006

Question
I have taken this medication at a low level for some years for chronic prostatitis as well as occassional bouts of diverticulisis.

I have reduced some and seem to have some discomfor such as minor abdominal discomfort,  Rather than return to former level of cipro is there anything i can take to help, such as tylenol, etc.  I have also been told to gradually increase Metamuciol because of periods of minor constipation.  I understand that psyllium can also cause this type of discomfort but little  option other fiber supplements not that easy to purchase in this area where I live in Canada.

Answer
The first thing I always question is .... is the diagnosis correct... has it been proven that you really have diverticula, via a colonoscopy or barium enema?  If so, then you must have a diet that has enough fiber to keep your bowel mvmts soft and frequent... metamucil and others can help, or natural fibers... but, if there is an infection, then you need antibiotics... if you have taken cipro a lot, then you could have an infection that is resistant to cipro... you might need another antibiotic... cipro works often, but we sometimes have to use other meds, sometimes 2-3 antibiotics at the same time to cure a bowel infection.

Hope this helps.....
