Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions/Fatty Liver

Question
Hi
I have all the symptoms of fatty liver, cheif of which is the inability to lose weight,an enlarged abdomen, and a pain in my right upper abdomen.
I believe this was from years of binge drinking beer on weekends.
I am determined now to stop.
Instead of drinking on weekend I am going to go on long hikes.
How long will it take for my liver to begin healing itself, and for the signs of improved health to appear?
I just need something to look forward too!

Answer
what you have to look forward to is a better life.  The liver has a tremendous ability to regenerate but remember nothing happens instantly.  You said yourself you spent years of drinking so be patient and keep steadfast with your change in lifestyle.  Your physician will need to monitor the changes with you through lab tests and possible liver scans.

I commend you on your choice to make the changes.  You will not regret it.
