Question I have taken Fosamax for 5 years for osteopenia and have just learned of a side effect of the drug called necrosis (death) of the jawbone. Extraction of a tooth usually causes the onset of this condition. Since I have Sjogren's Syndrome, I am especially concerned as the lack of saliva causes me to have dental problems. Should I stop taking Fosamax and, if so, is there an alternative medication that would be just as beneficial? Thank you.
Answer Hi Brenda,
There is an alternative to Fosamax called Evista. It will help in bone health. Although not quite as good, it does work. It doesn't have that side effect of jaw necrosis. Considering your Sjogren's, it might be a good idea to discuss this change with your healthcare provider. Also recent data is showing that Evista has breast cancer prevention associated with its use. We knew this was coming but just had to wait till the FDA got off it's ass and said so. Sorry for THAT outburst, but sometimes our government in it's effort to protect citizens gets it wrong and takes to long. Anyway, ask about Evista as an alternative, OK?
