Expert: John Thai, M.D. Date: 9/28/2007 Subject: Long term effects of Zofran use in pregnancy.
Question Hi,
I am almost 9 weeks pregnant and have a prescription for Zofran but am afraid to take it. I have a 4 year old with autism, and a perfectly healthy 2 year old. I used Zofran with the 2 year old who is healthy, but I didn't know my other son had Autism at the time. I know it is pregnancy category B but it hasn't been studied in humans yet. Have you seen any long term effects from it? Thanks!
Answer Hi Amy,
Zofran is an anti-emetic drug. You are correct that there has been no studies demonstrating the adverse reactions of administering Zofran during pregnancy and an association with fetal abnormalities, demise, or genetic abnormalities. All pharmaceutical researches are conducted on animals to determine pregnancy risks. It is highly unethical to perform on pregnant women to determine risk unless it has proven to be safe.
To the best of my knowledge, there has not been any report of fetal abnormality due to Zofran.
However, I recommend you to obtain advisory from your obstetrician.
