Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - dizziness

Question
Hi!
I am a 43 year old woman.  I have a problem that seems to be kind of on-going. I go through spells where I'm kind of dizzy.  I was getting headachy and swingy in the head and then got up with vertigo one morning last spring. Throwing up and all that.  So I went to the doctor for the headaches and he gave me Nasonex.  That seemed to help the headaches, but now this spring, I am feeling funny in the head again.  Two days ago, I got out of bed and my head felt funny.  I call it dizzy, but its something I can't explain.  It wasn't full-blown vertigo, but I was going to get sick.  I had an intense hungry feeling that made me nauseous and was trembling, so I ran to get something sweet. (Infrequently I wake up in the middle of the night very nauseous and quickly get something to eat and then I'm fine.)the first thing I saw was a piece of salt water taffy, so I ate that. It didn't do it for me, so I took Benadryl and used the Nasonex.  I also tried to eat some bread.  I had to lie down anyhow and I was cold and shivery and still nauseous, like an intense hunger pain.  Then it seemed like I had to urinate frequently for a while.  Toward mid-morning, I gradually felt better - I dozed a little - And around 10:30 AM I was able to get up.  But I still felt very weak and trembly and light-headed. As the day wore on, I felt better and better, till evening I felt 100% great. Now this morning I can feel it in my head a bit.  I started taking 24 hour Clariton.  I had a complete blood screen a couple of months ago and everything looked great.  I'm also taking 25 mcgs of Synthroid and 25mcgs of Cytomel for hypothyroidism. It seems like we can't get that regulated very well. It goes too high and then too low.  I've taken about every combination available.  I was taking both every day, but Sunday skipping the Cytomel.  Then I still started getting trembly and out of breath because of a racing heartbeat after the sightest exertion.  So on my own, I decided to cut out the Cytomel on Wednesdays, too.  I still am trembly in the hands.  I get tired of calling for a blood test.  Could the head thing be a part of that or does it just sound like allergies.  I've had allergies all my life of some form or another.  Should I go to an endocrinologist?  Nobody ever checked my thyroid except to feel it the first time I was diagnosed three years ago.  When I had my first blood test it was down to 130.80.    Anyhow, I am tired of feeling ill.  It is a rare occasion when I feel good it seems like. I feel like some hypochondriac. Can you give me any ideas?  Thank you for your time.

Answer
Some people use cytomel along w/ synthroid... it isn't right or wrong, but I don't because of the difficulty of regulating the thyroid.  Also, use brand name only Synthroid because the dose fluctuates up and down in generics.

Blood sugar may be an issue... it would be nice to have a blood sugar checked during one of these episodes, if any of your friends have a meter.

The appropriate specialist to visit (in my opinion) would be a neurologist for the dizzy spells.  And, at some point, you may need an MRI of the inner ears, especially if you have ringing in the ears or any hearing loss.

Hope this helps...
