Actually, this physician may have done you a favor. Pantoprazole (Protonix) acts on different stimuli within the stomach to produce (basically) the same result. However, the chemical actions on the body may result in insufficient relief (what you apparently experienced) or overkill. Since the Protonix, which is the third weakest PPI on the market, was insufficient, Rabeprazole (Aciphex), which is chemically the strongest PPI on the market AND has the lowest incidence of side effects, was the best choice for your condition.
