Family, Internal Medicine, General Medical Questions - medical examinations

Expert: Margot RN BScN GNC - 11/29/2007

Question
Dear Margot.
I am 38, M, married, and for the last 5 years have had a very good female family Doctor. I feel terrible to admit that I have a medical fetish when it comes time for me to be examined for my yearly check up. My Doctor examines me while I have just my underwear on, and every year I always get a full erection of the penis that sometimes lasts for most of the examination. While I admit to this obvious excitement to being examined, I ALSO respect my Doctor and dont want her to be the object or victim of this stupid fetish. This past month was the worst when a small amount of fluid kind of squirted out from the penis when I got my DRE (digital rectal exam) My question is: What in the world do I do about this? From a womans medical perspective how do I explain this? How can I tell a Doctor I have a fetish for being examined? Or, how do I keep from getting aroused during these exams? Again, I respect my Dr and want to talk to her about this embarrassing situation.
Thank you very much for your consideration in answering this awkward question.
Regards, Kev

Answer
Hi Kevin and thanks for writing,

Please do not be embarrassed, this is a very common issue; I get this same question every other month or so. I do not believe you have a  fetish, you are just experiencing normal male reactions to being in the presence of a female in intimate circumstances.

If you want to address the issue, just speak to your doctor about it, or write a brief note - but please don't feel you must, as I say, many male patients react exactly this way.

All my best,
Margot
