Question
I am working on becoming a writer and my biggest concern was copying ideas rather than coming up with my own. I saw the trailer to the movie, "I Am Legend" and it was SO obvious that they were copying from Resident Evil movies. How can one come up with his OWN creative ideas without being so onvious that he is copying someone else's work where no one would be interested? It's bothered me for months. I could use some help here because I was told to be original but what concerns me is that if I don't read into the area that I am interested in like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings as well as how to write fantasy fiction, my work might be a mess. I need help here on this. People have this thing of copying like violating copyrights etc.  You are into fantasy and I thought maybe you could help. I don't want to push people away I want to attract them and keep them interested. Leaving them feeling like, "WOW!! That was a damn good story!" I could use the help here.

Answer
First of all know what you are writing for. If it is creative satisfaction then nothing beats crafting your own tale. If you want to make a quick buck then copy all you want (Christopher Paolini for example lifts heavily from star wars and tolkien). Also know that any good fantasy/SF tale is a metaphor for real life. The fantsy/SF background just serves  to illustrate some finer features in another context for greater emphasis. Of course do read the masters like Tolkien to get a feel of the technical details of storytelling. But please in the name of god keep the story original....

P.S. Do send me a copy when you finish writing your tale
