I am very notable on referring people to great books. If you tell me the kind of books you like or some of the big titles you loved reading, I am fairly sure I can point you in the direction of another great book.

Education/Credentials I am currently enrolled in a school which encourages students to read a wide variety of books among other things. Though this school requires me to read different genres, I prefer SciFi and Fantasy.

Question I'm a long-time fantasy reader, but I've gotten tired of boring fantasy books that are full of cliches. You know, the very standard ones that follow the same old Tolkien formula and overuse things like dragons, magic swords, and elves? Some of these books are good enough that they make up for the lack of originality, but the majority of them don't seem to stand out and they just end up being boring. Can you recommend any fantasy (or fantasy-ish) books or authors that are a bit different?
Some of my favorite authors are Terry Brooks, Tad Williams, Terry Pratchett, Piers Anthony, and Robert Jordan (only his first four books). I also like SOME stuff by Neil Gaiman, Weis & Hickman, and R.A. Salvatore (although his Drizzt series is mostly pretty overrated).
I also get annoyed with books that move way too slowly where nothing much happens in the plot, or it takes forever for it to go anywhere. Faster-paced books are preferable.
Answer I read this question about a week ago, and spent a while thinking about it. I believe you would be interested in George R R Martin. He writes similar to Robert Jordan, though Martin's books tend to contain more action, a better plot(I love the plot!!), and all around better storylines. His series, A Song of Ice and Fire, has become my favorite series. By reading your request, I was thinking about how similar you and I are. Except one thing... I like Drizzt. I hope this helps!
