About Santa Lucia
Expertise
I am a lover of fantasy turned on to the genre by my older sister and have read series by Mercedes Lackey, MZBradley, Melanie Rawn, Jennifer Roberson, Kate Elliott, Ursula LeGuin, Andre Norton, Robin Hobb, Elizabeth Lynn, Piers Anthony, Robert Jordan, Terry Goodkind, Elizabeth Moon, and many others. I love talking about books and getting suggestions on what to take on next!

Experience
I have read and written a multitude of stories and when I was fourteen bought over 300 fantasy novels in one year. I have read almost all of them by now and am constantly acquiring more.

Question
I am getting desperate to find a series I read in the 80's.  I remember some of the story, but not the titles or the author.  The story starts with a group of college students going to play a D&D like game with one of their professors acting as the GM.  During the game they are transported into the lives of their characters.  I remember that a character named jason became a thief and lost his hand early on in the first book, and I think another was named karl, and became a barbarian.  Not sure on that name though.  The students try to find a way back to their own world and find out that the professor is a mage from this world and sent them there on purpose.  They run into slavers and start a war with the slaver guild.  During this war they use their modern day knowledge to introduce gunpowder and other modern advantages and use them in combat.  The barbarian character becomes almost a king with hundreds of exslaves flocking to the group under his banner.  I hope that is enough detail for you to help me out.  I have been looking in stores and reading fantasy book descriptions online for 15 years to try to re-locate this series.

Thank you very very much

Answer
Chuck,
This is a great amount of detail and, by far, the best "do you know this book" that I have received.  Unfortunately, I am not familiar with this series and cannot help you.  That is always a hard thing to write.  You seem to have a good system set up for looking.  My only suggestion, which you are probably already using, is look into as many used book stores as possible.  They are a wealth of information in so many ways.
Best of luck,
Lucia
