Subject: How does one become a fashion historian?

Question
Hi! My name is Rachel and I have been searching the web for ages to try to figure out what to do with my life and I have it narrowed down to  a costume designer or a fashion historian. But the problem is that the college I am currently attending does not offer reputable degrees in either area. What degree would I need to be a fashion historian and what could I do once I finally finished school? Do you know of good schools, preferably in the mid-west, that offer the degree I need? Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Rachel!

The profession you are interested in is, in my opinion, one of the coolest jobs out there!
I would suggest going for a Masters degree at the least in Historic Costume.  Ohio State has one of the best programs out there.  After you complete your Masters, you could work at a  museum with their costume collection.  If you decide to get your PhD, you could be a professor of as well as do consulting for museum exhibits, film and television, etc.
University of Georgia, where I got my Masters has a great program in historic costume as well, although I know you are interested in the mid-west.
Good luck and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Congrats on deciding on such an interesting field!
Amanda
