Question
I wanted to get into fashion design as my first choice of a major, but didn't make the cut for my chosen college. I was a bit confused on where to go from there. I really do love dealing with clothes and accessories. I decided to major in fashion merchandising as my second choice, but I am a little unsure about it. I have the talent of drawing, I didn't want it to go to waste, but I don't want to waste anymore time. I know of some of the job areas I can get into with the FM degree. Can you fill me in on more careers besides being a buyer or a store manager? Also can you direct me to some websites I can do research on? I saw another letter where someone asked you about being a fashion editor. You suggested that they take Journalism as a major, and fashion merchandising as a minor. I found it interesting because I thought about working in a magazine company times before. The only problem is this school doesn't have minors, and my parent's don't have money to waste. I'm sure I can take extra journalism classes on the side. What is your suggestion?
Thank you  for you time,

Sincerely,

Snow M

Answer
If you want to work for a fashion publication, you need to major in journalism at a top school, because top magazines are extremely selective of their students. I do not know any fashion writers who have not majored in the journalism field at a top university.

With a Fashion Merchandising degree, you can go into visual, buying, retail management, etc. All of these careers offer growth: ie: retail manager could lead to district management, and into retail corporate management as you show progress.

Good luck!

Timothy
