Subject: Fur Coat

Question
I have a fur coat from either the 60s or 50s. It is a short jacket length. This fur is black. I know it is a fur because if I spread the fur apart I can see the animal skin. I recognize mink, fox, seal, and rabbit. I know this coat is none of those furs. What kind of fur is shinny and long, and flat, and thick? There is no tag in the jacket.

Any ideas? thanks!

Answer
Hmmm... I'm honestly not sure. I believe 90% of fur trade is done with mink, fox, and rabbit and leopard; which leaves me in the dark if it's none of these. I'm assuming you'd know if it were leopard due to the patterns.

It could be something exotic- black leopard or black panther possibly. I'm not totally familiar with the fur industry on what I'd say were an 'expert' level. I would try consulting a local fur shop, those people should be highly trained and able to answer your question.

When you find out, let me know- I'm curious too! :)

Thanks-

Timothy
