Subject: Grants for Independent Production Company

Question
I am an African-American male small business holder.  Someone recently told me that government grants may be available to my film production company because:
1) I am a minority
2) many of the films and plays we produce deal with ethnic themes and issues.
3) because I'm a new business
4) we always use minority actors/crew in our productions

There are many websites "claiming" to help you find the right grant for you.  I don't want to be scammed and I would love to have help funding our artistic endeavors.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Rob

Answer
Hi, Rob:  Thanks for the question.  One of the best sites to use is:
www.grants.gov and it is legit.  You might also want to contact your state representative's district office to see if they can assist you in identifying any state grants that might be available.  The nearest Small Business Administration (SBA) office might also be of assistance and SBA has a program by which your business can become a "certified" Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB).  Good Luck!
