If your fetish involves gear I can take it on. From electrosex to medical play I'll give you the best shot I can. I deal with some of the strangest things on an everyday basis and would be glad to help answer any question you might have, no matter how crazy or mundane. *New* If you're under 18, I'm no longer answering your questions. I understand that most people lose their virginities before they're 18, and that getting good advice, or even treated seriously as a sexual being can be problematic, but I'm not comfortable that the 12 year olds or such who are asking questions are always really 12 year olds and not strange old men or FBI agents. So, for any underage kids thinking of asking questions, here's my response up front: Use condoms (you aren't ready to have sex if you can't buy condoms), and don't do anything you're uncomfortable with.

Experience
I'm here as a representative of www.eXtremeRestraints.com. We're one of the biggest online BDSM and fetish gear retailers in the world. We carry just about everything you could possibly be into. We spent a lot of time finding quality kink gear to carry and make sure that it's all high quality and consistently satisfying, so we should know our stuff.

Subject: how do you get into the design side of the sex industry?

Question
I have kind of a weird question. I want to get into the sex industry, but I want to get into the sex industry, but in the industry part, not the sex.

I'm graduating from art school this weekend with a design degree and tomorrow I'll be interviewing with a bunch of industrial giants in mainstream consumer products, but I wanted to know, who can I talk to about getting into the porn industry from the manufacturing side? sex toys, whips and chains, costumes, that kind of thing. I've looked online, but naturally the only thing that comes up when you search for porn is... porn. I just don't know where to go.

I feel pretty well qualified and my education has covered stuff like manufacturing and materials, shipping and freight on board, I know what kind of plastic should and shouldn't be put into someone's tender orifices. Is there anyone I could call or send an email or resume too?

Answer
So Jack,
Here's what you need know. First off, the porn industry is much bigger and employs a lot more people than the sex toy industry.
Many of the online retailers that do much of the business are small operations employing less than 50 people. Many are simply one or two people. www.eXtremeRestraints.com is one of the biggest fetish and bondage gear retailers online, and we still don't even have 50 employees.
The next place to look up the line would be sex toy distributors. They need more man power and sales people. Still, many of them are also small operations. A low cost sex toy distributor like www.SexToyDistributing.com is going to have only a few representatives and a smooth efficient wholesale operation that's made for retailers who already know what they want, whereas a big distributor like El Dorado will likely have sales teams and many more customer service people. They'll heavily market themselves and visit stores. So they'd have more opportunities for you.
Up the line, further you're looking at manufacturers. Go to sex toy stores and see where the toys you like are coming from. Premium brands like Tantus or Njoy are going to be small employee light operations. You're going to find more jobs available at big companies like Doc Johnson, Pipe Dream, Topco Sales, Cal Exotics, and more.
You're just going to have to contact companies you'd like to work for. Many employees in the adult industry end up there because the right job came along at the right time on Craigslist. Look at where the companies you're interested in working at are located too. There are porn operations all over the country, but many big porn operations and sex toy manufacturers are based in the vicinity of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.
One important thing to remember is that being in the sex toy or porn industry still involves much time sitting in a cubicle with a computer and a phone. Many of the big ones are just as professional as any other company. In the end it is an industry, and they do business. There's more fun to be had in being a regular customer of eXtremeRestraints.com than working at eXtremeRestraints.com. Not that it's not fun, it's just not that kind of fun.
