Question Dear Friends,
I am a certified fitness trainer in Scranton, PA and was recently approached by a 50 year old woman who wants to train for better general fitness, but shared with me that she suffers from FM. I told her I did not have any experience dealing with clients with FM and I would research first. Her case is not constantly effecting her, but she has some bad days. Is there a certain type of training that is effective in promoting general fitness in those with FM? Some of my reading has indicated that isometric training/palates/yoga are most beneficial and may help relieve pain. Also, are certain cardiovascular activities more or less stressful for those with FM? I wondered also about swimming and water exercise as the buoyancy may make the exercises less stressful on the tendons and ligaments prone to the inflammation. What may be some diet concerns? My reading has indicated that certain amino acids may promote a painful FM episode. I would appreciate any advice or links to sources that may help me to be helpful to this woman.
Thank You,
Peter
Answer Hi...most of your questions are out of my area of expertise, but I will say swimming in a WARM pool (see the Arthritis Foundation's website to find out the temp range) is very good. I don't know about the amino acids part of your question, but as far as diet...sugar seems to be a culprit, so I try to stay away from that. Many people with fibromylalgia also have lactose intolerance/sensitive digestive tracts, so diet accordingly. Also, gentle daily stretching upon awakening helps many people. For specific exercise parameters (according to the severity of her fibro), this client should contact her physician :)
