Subject: Glucosamine and Chdronidant

Question
What are you feelings on the above vitiams and if you recommend them what is the mg. and dosage?

Answer
Glucosamine and Chrondroitin can be useful in maintaining and improving joint health.  We cannot produce either from other food sources and sadly it isn't found in our diets anymore.  That means we must supplement with it.

Every joint in our body has a layer of "articular cartilage" lining the inner surface of it.  This cartilage lubricates and reduces friction as the joint moves.  Articular cartilage is made up of the water-binding molecules Glucosamine and Chrondroitin.  Cells call "chrondrocytes" repair and maintain the cartilage.  To do so they need raw materials, such as Glucosamine and Chrondroitin.  Without these raw materials wear and tear can accumulate and potentially lead to degenerative changes within the joint.

In studies done on radio-labeled Glucosamine and Chrondroitin it was found that Chondroitin is POORLY absorbed when supplementing and that it can be made in the body from Glucosamine!  That means don't supplement with Chrondroitin because it isn't absorbed and it makes the supplement more expensive unneccesarily.

Please understand that there is very little regulation on supplement quality.  If you are taking it for a purpose, spend a little extra and get a brand that is assayed for purity and content.  If not, you risk it not helping.  Store brands are typically of low quality and benefit.

Most experts agree dosage of Glucosamine is important.  500mg/50 lbs of body weight is a good rule of thumb.   Stop taking it if you notice anything abnormal and consult a qualified health professional.

There are many forms of Glucosamine out there.  Make sure that you take the "Glucosamine Sulfate" form it is more bioactive.  If you have a Sulfa allergy don't worry, it is a completely different kind of molecule, not even in the same family.

Hope that helps.
