I can answer questions about figure skating, choreography, ISI or USFSA. Also questions about competing (my Olympic experience or your own competition). I`m a National referre for ISI. Recently I also have been appointed a National Technical Specialist for US Figure Skating. But remember I am not your substitute for a coach! They can see what you are doing! To correct or instruct you on manuevers is really not what I want to do.

Figure Skating - Bielman

Expert: Dianne DeLeeuw - 10/24/2008

Question
QUESTION: Dianne: How would you teach a Bielman position to a skater?

Also, after they master the position, do you have tips for doing the Bielman Spiral and Bielman Spin?

ANSWER: Hi, it is not easy!  Definately work off ice first.  Then it is learning to find your blade on a glide as well as spinning.  After many months or so, perhaps you will be ready to pull up.  Flexibility is your biggest friend here!
Good luck with it, Dianne
PS. Not everyone can do it!  For some the pain it causes is not worth it!

QUESTION: Hi, I am not flexible, but I need to be able to do a Bielmann spiral, what
stretches should I do?

Answer
Hi,
You will need to work on the floor first.  I would suggest getting some sort of strap to help pull up your foot.  There are yoga ones and stretching specific ones.  Pull your foot and leg up gently to build strength.  Go slow!  Also many yoga stretches will help.  Take a class or get a DVD to start.
Ask your coach to work with you.  I do not know what your body can take and your age.  Older skaters have more trouble getting it, but are stronger once flexible.
Also make sure your spins are good enough to attempt this!
Good luck,
Dianne
