About Dianne DeLeeuw
Expertise
I can answer questions about figure skating, choreography, ISI or USFSA. Also questions about competing (my Olympic experience or your own competition). I`m a National referre for ISI. Recently I also have been appointed a National Technical Specialist for US Figure Skating. But remember I am not your substitute for a coach! They can see what you are doing! To correct or instruct you on manuevers is really not what I want to do.

Publications: Recreational Ice Skater, The Edge

Awards: 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist, 1975 World Champion, 1976 European Champion, 6 time National Champion, US and Canadian Double Gold Medalist, 1999 ISI Great Skate Award, 2002 Woman of the Year

Figure Skating - competition placement

Expert: Dianne DeLeeuw - 11/27/2008

Question
Hi,
I am 9 and I don't understand why I was able to get 1st place in compulsory moves but not in the freeskate competition.  I cried because I thought that if my elements are correct and I skate without wobbing or fall down I will win.  There was this girl who got 3rd place in compulsory moves and was placed better than me in the freeskate competition.  This has happen 3 times already.  Please help me understands and see what I can do to win next time.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi,
You cannot cry over a placement.  You need to work with your coach to improve your routine.  Maybe it does not have what is needed to place well.  Compulsory moves are clear on rules, but sometimes a freeskate misses something.  Go over what is required and allowed for your level.  Work on your presentation and enjoy your program!
Good luck,
Dianne
